- Definitely pack a first aid kit on every camping trip. Either purchase one ready-made from your local home store or assemble one yourself. Items to include: antiseptics, antihistamines, bandages, medical tape, gauze, super glue, tweezers, whistle, rope, insect repellent, and pain relievers.
- Additionally, bring an emergency survival kit. This is particularly important if you’re heading out into the wilderness or backcountry. Items to include: map, compass, GPS, flashlight, waterproof fire starter, knife, thermal blanket, and extra snacks and water.
- Check for potential safety hazards as soon as you arrive at your campsite. Look for poison ivy, insects that bite, unsafe terrain, and sharp objects. You’re less likely to need to do this in well-maintained provincial and forestry campsites.
- Bring appropriate bear proof trash and recycle bins if they’re not provided at your destination.
- Possibly the most important safety tip is to ensure you build a campfire in a safe area. Check park bulletins and provincial campfire bans prior to leaving. Build fires and position open camp stoves a safe distance from tents. Learn how to build and properly extinguish a campfire before you go; never leave one unattended.
- Verify the weather forecast before you head out. Then pack appropriate clothing and waterproof gear to keep close at hand.
