Winter Camping in a Roof Top Tent

The winter months aren’t usually the first that most people picture when they think of camping, but hardened campers and outdoor enthusiasts know that winter brings plenty of opportunities for exploring the wilderness. In more milder parts of the province like the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, winter camping is much more akin to fall or spring camping in other parts of Canada. When camping during the colder months in those locales, making sure your camping setup is prepared for rain and wind is key. This means bringing plenty of warm and waterproof clothing, as well as other accessories to keep the rain off. Our line of Auto Awnings are great for keeping the rain away from your cooking and eating areas, and take just seconds to set-up from the side of your automobile. Unlike tarps, with our Auto Awnings you won’t have to rely on tying your cover to trees, and they’re much more resilient when it comes to being blown around by the wind.

In coastal areas campers are generally safe from snowfall even in the middle of winter, but it still pays to be prepared for a sudden snowfall while camping. As with preparing for rain, bringing plenty of warm and waterproof clothing is key, and don’t neglect to bring extra warm footwear as well – having warm feet makes all the difference when camping in the cold. Tourism in B.C. is heavily concentrated in the summer months, meaning that visitors can expect quiet campgrounds, less crowded ferries and lighter traffic on the roads. Although the daylight hours are short, the time saved travelling on less-congested roads and the relative ease of finding a place to camp helps to make up for this.

For car campers, the colder months bring with them the increased importance of shelter and warmth. With our highly waterproof and windproof roof top tents, setting up a dry and comfortable shelter takes just minutes – something worth its weight in gold in the unpredictable fall weather of Western Canada.

When attached to the roof rack of your vehicle, you can sleep with confidence knowing that you’re well-protected from the elements. Unlike ground tents that create a lot of noise when flapping in the wind, sleeping in your roof top tent is a much more pleasant experience. If snow or rain is in the forecast then having your own roof top tent is a definite advantage – with their hard-shell construction, our roof tents won’t sag or rip under the weight of heavy snow like ground tents can.

To make camping in the colder months even more enjoyable, we also recommend configuring and testing out your sleeping arrangements before you set off. Knowing that your sleeping arrangements are comfortable ahead of time helps to prevent any unpleasant surprises upon arrival at your campsite.
