Overlanding: Three Regions to Explore in B.C.

At Roof Top Tents we are passionate about overlanding and we are always looking for new places to explore right here in our own backyard. British Columbia covers a huge area of rugged mountains, green forests, deep inlets and turquoise alpine lakes with opportunities for adventure in almost all every setting you can imagine.

One of the best ways to explore the beautiful landscapes of B.C. is with your own roof top tent and auto awning from Roof Top Tents. Our products are designed to be used in all of the weather this province can bring. Each one of our roof top tents is designed for all-season use, and when coupled with our line of winter camping-friendly accessories you’ll be set for whatever the weather throws at you.

In this article, we’ve compiled a list of three places to go exploring in BC. Each region is relatively accessible so you may not have to drive too far from your starting point. We begin on the West Coast and then move eastward towards the Rockies and the Alberta border.

Tofino/Ucluelet

The West Coast – specifically, Vancouver Island – has become famous over the past few decades for its overlanding opportunities. Adventurous residents of B.C. don’t have to travel far for a classic overlanding experience. The beaches on the west coast of Vancouver Island are a popular destination for overlanders; so much so that that many campground and roads swell with visitors in the summer. Tofino in particular is known as arguably one of the best places in Canada (if not North America) to catch waves. Both Ucluelet and Tofino offer great opportunities for fishing, hiking, biking and many other activities as well. Spots for campgrounds in and around Tofino and Ucluelet are hard to come by especially in the summer months, so we highly recommend booking your spot well in advance.

Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast offers a variety of overlanding opportunities with its close proximity to Vancouver. There is no shortage of trails, parks and beaches over which you can explore and camp over the course of your trip along the Sunshine Coast Highway. As you might expect from the name, the weather along the Sunshine Coast is very sunny, especially in the summer months. This makes it a great choice for Vancouverites or residents of the Lower Mainland to escape to for a short (or long) overlanding trip. Booking your ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale and back is highly recommend on summer weekends.

Okanagan

The Okanagan is popular summertime destination for those in B.C. and beyond, and for good reason. The hot and sunny weather of the Okanagan makes for a wide variety of recreational opportunities, including swimming, boating, hiking, sunbathing and many more. Spring comes earlier and fall comes later here than in many other parts of the Interior, making the Okanagan a great place to explore when many other places in the province are stuck in perpetual rain or covered with snow. A large valley, the B.C. Okanagan stretches from Osoyoos near the U.S. border in the south all the way up to just south of Salmon Arm on Lake Shuswap in the north. We highly recommend exploring the lakes, orchards and vineyards of the Okanagan by overlanding. Remember to bring the sunscreen if visiting in summer – you’re almost guaranteed plenty of sunshine.
