In this article, we’ve compiled two overlanding routes to go explore in BC during 2022. Each region is relatively accessible so you may not have to drive too far from your starting point.
Pacific Marine Circle Route
Go full circle on Southern Vancouver Island with the Pacific Marine Circle Route. A road with varied landscapes, stops and views, the loop is a popular trek amongst driving enthusiasts. The total drive clocks in at a total of 263 km or 163 miles, and can be done in a single day – although we recommend staying a night or two along the way to truly enjoy the trip.
With beach pull outs, broad ocean views and some of the most majestic old-growth forest in the province, the Pacific Marine Circle Route ranks high amongst drivers across Vancouver Island and beyond. It’s also a thrilling drive—winding roads and steep hills will put your handling skills to the test. The entire road is paved, meaning you won’t need a 4×4 vehicle – although it can come in handy should you choose to take some of the many off-road trails dotted along the Pacific Marine Circle Route.
Pemberton – Braelorn – Bradian – Seton Portage – Highline Road
Starting and finishing in the picturesque village of Pemberton, this 425 kilometre loop features stunning mountain views and plenty of history. All the roads involved are easily passible with 4×4 or high clearance 2WD vehicles. Be sure to bring good tires before setting out though, as many of the roads are rocky and can damage worn tires easily. This scenic loop is best done over 2-4 days in order to take advantage of the many side roads scattered along the way.
This region is a protected Grizzly Bear Sanctuary, so taking precautions for bear encounters and other wildlife is essential. Since this is loop is more of an off-road experience than the Pacific Marine Circle Route, we recommend going during the summer or early fall. Snowmelt and runoff during the spring can render many off-road trails impassable
