OUR STORY
Born on Vancouver Island. Built for Every Road in Between.
We didn’t start as a gear company. We started as a family that believed a van, an open road, and a good night’s sleep under the stars could change how you see the world.
Where It All Started
It started with a backpack, a hostel noticeboard, and an ad for a campervan rental somewhere in Europe.
Back in the early 2000s, travelling through Europe, the idea of renting a campervan and just — going — felt like the ultimate freedom. No bookings, no schedule, no campsite required. Just wake up, pick a direction, and drive. Life got in the way that trip and the campervan dream didn’t happen overseas. But the idea never left.
Back home on Vancouver Island, that seed grew into something real. Vancouver Island is one of the most extraordinary places on earth to explore — old-growth forests, rugged coastline, logging roads that disappear into the wilderness, beaches at Tofino where the Pacific crashes in off ten thousand kilometres of open ocean. The kind of place that deserves to be experienced slowly, with nowhere to be and no campsite required. And at the time, nobody was making it easy for backpackers and travellers to actually do that.
So the family got to work. They started building a small fleet of campervans — converted minivans kitted out with beds, camp gear, rooftop tents, and everything a traveller needed to properly explore BC. Van Ventures Rentals Ltd. was born.
The Years on the Road
For years, Van Ventures put travellers from around the world behind the wheel of a proper adventure rig. The stories that came back with the vans were incredible. Surfers who parked overnight at Cox Bay and woke up to glassy morning sets. Families who made it up to Side Bay on the wild northern tip of the Island, where the logging roads give way to old-growth silence. Couples who paddled off Hornby Island by day and slept on top of their van by night. Solo travellers who somehow found San Joseph Bay at the end of that long gravel road and said it was the best decision they’d ever made.
Those vans carried a lot of dreams. And every single renter wanted to know the same thing when they got back: “Where do I get one of those rooftop tents?”
From Renting Vans to Outfitting Adventures
As our own family grew — kids, school runs, the beautiful chaos of a household in full swing — the rental business naturally evolved. The pivot made complete sense. We’d spent years learning what gear actually worked in real Canadian conditions. We knew which tents held up to the coast rain, which racks were worth the investment, which awnings didn’t rattle themselves apart on a logging road. We’d seen it all firsthand.
Roof Top Tents launched, and it grew quickly. Rooftop tents first, then racks and awnings, then the full overlanding setup — canopies, tonneau covers, recovery gear, power stations, cooking gear. Today we carry over 100 products purpose-built for serious Canadian adventurers, shipping to customers in every province.
Then Came Kermode Overland
As the brand grew, something became clear: we couldn’t call ourselves Roof Top Tents forever. Our customers weren’t just buying tents anymore. They were building complete overlanding setups — truck beds, racks, awnings, canopies, the whole rig. We needed a name that matched who we’d become.
So we created Kermode Overland — our own line of branded gear including quality racks, awnings, tonneau covers, aluminum truck canopies, and storage systems. Products designed and tested for the roads and conditions we know best.
The name Kermode comes from the Kermode bear — the Spirit Bear of BC. A black bear born with a rare recessive gene that turns its coat white. Not albino. Not a different species. Just an extraordinary version of itself.
The Kermode bear is found almost exclusively in the Great Bear Rainforest of coastal BC — one of the most remote and untouched wildernesses in the world. To the Indigenous peoples of the coast, it is a sacred animal, a symbol of harmony between the wild and the rare. It is unhurried. Self-sufficient. It needs nothing but its own strength and the land beneath its feet.
That’s the spirit we wanted to carry into the brand. The overlander’s mindset isn’t so different from the bear’s — the deep pull toward wild places, the satisfaction of being genuinely self-sufficient, carrying everything you need and owing nothing to a campsite booking or a power hookup. You and your rig and the road ahead. The Kermode bear embodies that completely.
It also felt right for a brand born on Vancouver Island and raised on BC’s backcountry. The Spirit Bear doesn’t exist everywhere. Neither do we. Kermode Overland is built here, for this terrain, by people who actually drive it.
A Real Family Business — Not a Warehouse
Behind Roof Top Tents and Kermode Overland is Van Ventures Rentals Ltd. — a family-run business based in Nanaimo, BC. When you call or email us, you’re talking to the same people who built this from the ground up. Not a call centre. Not a third-party fulfilment operation. A family that has been living this life for over a decade.
That matters because buying a rooftop tent or building out a full overland rig isn’t like ordering a pair of shoes. You need to know if it fits your specific roof, your rack, your vehicle. You need someone who can tell you whether a tent will handle the weather you’re actually heading into. You need someone who’s been there.
We’ve been there. We live here. And we want your next adventure to be as good as the ones we’ve been hearing about for over a decade.

Built for BC — Shipped Across Canada
We’re proud to be based on Vancouver Island, one of the best overlanding destinations in the country. Tofino’s wild Pacific coast. Hornby Island’s hidden bays. The long gravel push to San Joseph Bay. Side Bay and the remote north end of the Island where the logging roads thin out and the old-growth takes over. Strathcona Provincial Park. We’re surrounded by extraordinary terrain, and it drives everything we do.
But our customers are everywhere — Alberta truck owners building out weekend rigs, Ontario families heading into Algonquin, prairie adventurers crossing the Rockies. We ship coast to coast, and we bring the same care and expertise to every order, wherever it’s going.
